Professor Walter Van Mieghem

Professor Van MieghemPresident of the working group on heart failure and cardiac function, Belgian Society of Cardiology Department Head of Cardiology and Coronary Care Unit of Ziekenhuis Oost-Limburg Genk.

Walter Van Mieghem is currently the President of the working group on heart failure and cardiac function at the Belgian Society of Cardiology. He is also the head of the department of Cardiology and Coronary Care Unit of Ziekenhuis Oost-Limburg Genk. From 1967-1970, he completed his internal medicine training at K.U Leuven. The following year he studied at Grote Schuur Hospital in Cape Town. From 1972-1973, he completed a years training back at K.U Leuven Intensive Care and then another year in K.U. Leuven in the Department of Clinical Research Experience, specialising in modern 20th-21st century international clinical trials.

His clinical research experience is extensive, having done more than 30 international Phase II and Phase III clinical trials. He was a member of the steering committee SHIFT study in 2006 and in the same year a member of the DSMB SPIRIVA study.

In addition, Professor Van Mieghem has been on severeal renowned boards, starting in 1972, with the Belgian board of Specialist Internal Medecine. Following this in 1993 is was a member of both Belgian boards of Cardiology and Cardiac rehabilitation. In 1998 he further became a member of the Belgian board of Intensive Care.

From 1974-1992 he was the head of the Departement of Cardiology and Intensive Care at the Andre Dumont Hospital Genk. Prior to this from 1973-1993 he became the head of the Department of Intensive Care at theUniversity Hospital in Pellenberg, Leuven. In 1982, he lectured cardiovascular physiology and pathopyhsiology at the Hasselt university. Finally in2002, he succeeded as the head of the Department of Cardiology at Ziekenhuis Oost-Limburg Genk.
