Massimo Volpe is Full Professor of Cardiology and of Internal Medicine and is currently Chairman of Cardiology and of the Specialty School of Cardiology, at the University of Rome “La Sapienza”. He is Chief of the Cardiology Division and of the Department of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Science and of the Hypertension Unit (recognized as Centre of Excellence) at Sant’Andrea Hospital; Rome, Italy.
Responsible of the Cardiovascular Research laboratory at the IRCCS Neuromed, Polo Molisano University “Sapienza”, Pozzilli - Italy.
Main fields of research include neurohormonal control of circulation and cardiovascular structural and functional abnormalities in hypertension and heart failure. Professor Volpe has led many research programs in the field of hypertension pathophysiology and cardiovascular prevention and has participated in several large international clinical trials (ONTARGET, VALIANT, I-PRESERVE, HEAAL, OCTAVE APROS DYADIS, PLATO, TRILOGY, TRACER, ASPIRE ATMOSPHERE), according to GCP guidelines. He has been IN THE Steering Committee of I-SEARCH, I-DEMAND and he is Italian Coordinator of ASTRONAUT. He coordinates multicenter research finalized programs of Italian Ministry of Health and Education and has also received financing from: National Research Council, NATO and, European Union (Network of Excellence of the VI Framework Programme). He has received scientific awards, grants, and funding from scientific societies, institutions, nonprofit research organizations (including Telethon). He is currently The Local Coordinator at the University of Rome “Sapienza” within the European Research Project Ingenious Hypercare Network of Excellence.
He has authored more than 500 publications on the most prestigious cardiovascular peer-reviewed national and international journals (including Nature Genetics, Cinical Invest, Circulation, Hypertension, Fed. Proc., JACC, PNAS, J Hypertens, etc.).
He has lectured in international congresses (AHA-HBPC, ACC, ESC, ASH, ESH, WCC, Russian Congress of Cardiology, Spanish Society HT) and in foreign universities (Cornell University, Harvard Med School, NYU, Mayo Clinic, University of Paris La Sorbonne, Madrid and Barcelona, Berlin, Amsterdam, L Zurich, UCSD, Tokyo), European Parliament in Bruxelles.
Professor Volpe is a member of Italian Societies (Cardiology, Internal Medicine, Hypertension), and of International Societies (Hypertension, American Heart Association (High Blood Pressure Council), American Society of Hypertension (Charter Member), European Society of Hypertension, and European Society of Cardiology (Fellowship). A former member of the Directive Council of the Italian Society of Hypertension and Cardiology, Professor Volpe is President of the Italian Society of Cardiovascular Prevention since 2010, elected President of the Italian Society of Hypertension (2012-2014) and has been chairman of the program Committee of the Italian Society of Cardiology (2005-2006). He has been member of the Cardiology National Consult of the Ministry of Health. In addition, he is Fellow of the AHA (High Blood Pressure Council), ESC and a Hypertension Specialist of the ESH.
He has been on the editorial boards of American Journal of Hypertension, Journal of Hypertension, Journal of the American Society of Hypertension, Journal of Cardiovascular Medicine, Journal of Molecular Medicine, European Heart Journal (from 2009) and several other journals and is currently Editor-in-Chief of High Blood Pressure and Cardiovascular Prevention. He has served a reviewer for many top scientific journals and international research programs.
Professor Volpe received his medical degree magna cum laude from the University of Naples Federico II, and is Board certified in Cardiology. He was a research fellow with the Italian Research Council and NATO, Fellow and then Assistant Professor at the Cardiovascular and Hypertension Center, Cornell University Medical College-The New York Hospital, New York, NY for several years.
