Giuseppe Mancia is Professor of Medicine and Chairman of the Department of Clinical Medicine and Prevention, (Italy) Chairman of the Department of Medicine, St. Gerardo Hospital, Monza, Milan.
Prof. Mancia trained at the University of Siena Medical School from which he graduated in 1964. He earned a PhD in Physiology in 1970, was an Investigator at the National Research Council from 1965-1969 and an Assistant Professor of Medicine at the University of Milan, School of Medicine from 1969-1973.
He was also a Post-graduate Fellow of the US Public Health Services and a Research Associate at the Mayo Clinic and Foundation from 1972-1974. In 1974, he completed a residency program in Cardiology at the Virginia Commonwealth University. He went on to become Associate Professor of Medicine in 1973 and Professor of Medicine at the University of Milan School of Medicine in 1985.
Prof. Mancia has served as President (1988-1990) and Secretary (1984-1988) of the International Society of Hypertension (ISH). He also served as President of the European Society of Clinical Investigation (1980-1982), Chairman of the Working Group on Hypertension and the Heart of the European Society of Cardiology (ESC) (1994- 1996), as a member of the Executive Scientific Committee of the European Society of Cardiology (1986-1991) and as President of the Italian Society of Hypertension (1997- 1999). Prof. Mancia is past President of the European Society of Hypertension (ESH) (1999-2001) of the American Society of Hypertension for several years and has chaired the Task Force for ESH/ESC guidelines on hypertension in 2003, 2007 and 2009. He is also a Faculty Member of the International Cardiovascular and Metabolic Academy (ICMA). Prof. Mancia has received several Awards among which the Franz Volhard Award and the Tigersted Award of ISH, the Björn Folkow Award of ESH, the Heymans Award of the International Society of Pharmacology. He has received the Honorary Spinoza Professorship by the University of Amsterdam, and the Degree Honoris Causae by the Gdansk University.
Prof. Mancia is an Honorary Member of various national and international scientific Societies among which the High Blood Pressure Council of Australia, the American Society of Behavioural Medicine, the Clinical Autonomic Research.
Prof.Mancia has served on editorial boards of more than 30 international journals of cardiology, hypertension and internal medicine for which he has edited more than 60 special issues or supplements. He has been chief or associate editor of various international hypertension journals and is at presently deputy editor of the Journal of Hypertension.
