Alejandro de la Sierra, M.D., Ph.D., F.A.H.A., is Head of the Department of Internal Medicine at the Hospital Mutua Terrassa of the University of Barcelona in Barcelona, Spain. He also serves as Associate Professor at the University of Barcelona, Spain. He also serves as Consultant of the Department of Medicine at the same Hospital and as Associate Professor at the University of Barcelona, Spain.
Dr. de la Sierra received his M.D. in 1981, from the School of Medicine at the University of Barcelona and his Ph.D. in 1987 from the same university. Between 1987 and 1988 he worked as a Research Fellow at the Hospital Necker, Paris, France. From 1982 to 2009, he has served in the Department of Internal Medicine at the Hospital ClĂnic and he is currently the head of the department of medicine at the Hospital Mutua Terrassa. Since 1986 he has also served as professor at the School of Medicine. He obtained the Clinical Hypertension Specialist accreditation form the ESH in June, 2001.
The main areas of research of Dr. de la Sierra have been the study of erythrocyte ion transport systems, the mechanisms of the pressor effect of salt intake, endothelial dysfunction and the determinants of subclinical target organ damage. He has published more than 100 original papers in international peer-review magazines, as well as editorials, reviews and commentaries. Moreover, he has contributed to national and international meetings with lectures, oral and poster presentations.
Dr. de la Sierra has participated as a faculty member in Spanish, European and International Meetings devoted to Hypertension and he is member of different scientific societies, including the International Society of Hypertension, the European Society of Hypertension, and the American Heart Association. In the Spanish Society of Hypertension he serves as the coordinator of the Medical Education and he is the current President of the Catalan Society of Hypertension.
