The objective of the ONTARGET^® trial is to compare the efficacy of telmisartan versus ramipril in preventing cardiovascular morbidity and mortality and determine any additional benefit of combining telmisartan with ramipril, compared with ramipril in monotherapy.

The TRANSCEND^® trial objective is to compare the efficacy of telmisartan versus placebo in preventing cardiovascular morbidity and mortality in patients intolerant to ACE inhibitors.

In both trials, study medications are administered on top of standard therapy including statins, antiplatelet therapy, beta blockers, and/or other antihypertensives.
